Opportunity for researchers to attend an upcoming NERC engagement event on contemporary issues in environmental science
Hopkins Van Mil is inviting expressions of interest from researchers to attend an upcoming public dialogue workshop we are running with the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). This is an opportunity to discuss contemporary issues in environmental science with members of the public, other researchers and NERC staff. The workshop will be held in Birmingham on Saturday 11th February 2023, 11am – 4pm.

Background to the event
The event on 11th February is the culmination of a significant public dialogue which HVM has been commissioned by NERC to run. As part of this, HVM has been running workshops throughout December and January with public participants to discuss the issues in environmental science that matter to them. HVM will report on the project in the summer of 2023. NERC intends to learn from these discussions to understand where public and stakeholder input has the most potential to shape environmental science research agendas. What is discussed at this event will contribute to and inform NERC’s priority setting, including future iterations of its strategic delivery plan.
Who will be attending?
The event will be attended by up to 100 people who will be joining the dialogue from a range of perspectives:
Public participants drawn from community groups and from a broad sampling of people across the country
Environmental science researchers
Stakeholders with an interested in environmental science policy and planning
NERC staff involved in strategy, planning and engagement
What will happen at the event?
HVM team members will be facilitating the event using an Open Space format, this enables people to select discussion topics and move from topic to topic so as to contribute to a number of small group discussions throughout the event. This will create an engaging and inclusive session which enables people from a range of experiences and perspectives of environmental science to take part.
It will be an opportunity to join in open and meaningful conversation with a range of stakeholders, with a view to identifying shared areas of interest and priorities under NERC’s remit.
Practicalities
Support will be given to attendees to take part. This includes financial support which can be claimed directly from NERC, including an attendance fee and reasonable travel and subsistence costs.
We can only accommodate 30 environmental science researchers and wider stakeholders at the event, so please express interest as soon as possible, and by Friday 3rd February at the very latest.
