National Lottery Community Fund: Help Through Crisis Learning, Support and Evaluation Programme

HVM worked for 5 years in consortium with Ipsos Mori, NEF Consulting and Revolving Doors to deliver a Learning, Support and Evaluation programme for the National Lottery Community Fund: Help Through Crisis programme. HVM’s role within the consortium was to design, facilitate and report on the national and regional learning, support and networking events. There were 59 partnerships supporting people at a crisis point in their lives. Events were designed using a process plan created by HVM and facilitated by the HVM team. In day-long workshops, scoped in a co-design process with the partnerships, participants were encouraged to share the challenges they were facing and the solutions they were creating. They heard from guest speakers and built new relationships with partnerships from across the programme. Each event was hosted and lead facilitated by HVM to enable over 100 participants to benefit from the opportunity. In addition HVM designs and delivered regional learning, support and evaluation events. Data was collated, reported on and disseminated by HVM so that all those involved in the programme could benefit from the learning gathered in each region.

Hull City of Culture 2017: Qualitative evaluation

HVM was included in the Hull City of Culture 2017 Qualitative Evaluation Framework. We designed and delivered a Walk and Talk approach for the evaluation of a major public event involving 12,000 audience members across 3 days of immersive, site specific performance called 7 Alleys. After the production we spoke to small groups and individuals whilst walking through the route of the performance using the site as a trigger for remembering key aspects of the performance, its value to them as individuals, and importance in terms of bringing to life Hull’s cultural heritage for local communities. The report informed future work within the culture programme, particularly on what works well in engaging audiences in their own rich history.

National Lottery Heritage Fund: Heritage Endowment Evaluation

Since January 2018 and until March 2021 HVM is working with 16 grantees in receipt of matched funding from NLHF's Heritage Endowment Programme. The programme seeks to help organisations to create financial reserves that can be drawn on and invested to create a regular source of annual income. HVM has devised a series learning and sharing opportunities over the three years of the programme to support the evaluation process. This includes one-to-one interviews, webinars and learning and sharing events which bring all grantees together once a year to share their experiences and learn from each other on what works well and less well when developing a heritage endowment campaign. By the end of the process the grantees, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the wider sector will have a set of recommendations on:
- What the value of Heritage Endowments has been
- How the process has enabled organisations to achieve their funding targets
- The difference in findings between this cohort of grantees and those awarded Catalyst Endowments, so that
- NLHF can add to its knowledge on the value of endowments in the cultural sector.
